Continuing with the theme of my last post - resistance training at different ages - we move on to the next age demographic, adolescence.

Adolescence is often described as the period of transition from childhood to adulthood and coincides with puberty; in other words, this is a very important stage for development and growth. Though there has been less controversy with regards to resistance at this age, it is very important to identify what type of resistance training should be performed by adolescents.

It is important to distinguish between resistance or strength training and bodybuilding. resistance/strength training is all about development and growth through the body's natural range of motion in a given movement. Body building is more about the size of the muscle that functional strength.

It is exactly that functionality, or rather lack of, that makes bodybuilding an activity which adolescents should avoid. During such an important stage of growth and development, adolescents should work on increasing strength through a full range of motion.

That being said, ultimately, the most important thing in adolescence is that the individual is active and enjoying what they are doing.
